The May 10 Times article "Highlights of House GOP budget cuts" was mistitled and should have been headlined "Lowlights ..."
Are we returning to the early 20th century with these draconian cuts? We are all aware that this country is operating with a deep deficit and we need to curb spending, but why at the cost of the disabled, hungry children and struggling low-income families? I cannot imagine where this mean-spirited attitude toward those in need comes from, yet it seems to be residing prominently in the House of Representatives today.
I object to these cuts, not only on humanitarian grounds and in the spirit of this good country, but also on a practical level. Few of our fellow citizens and their children struggling with poverty will ever become consumers, entrepreneurs or skilled and well-educated. We all lose this way.
