KQED Forum: Nancy Pelosi / California's 8th Congressional District (includes audio link. For this segment, advance to 22:18.)

Michael Krasny: Let me see if we can get a quick other caller on. Brian, go ahead, you’re on.

Brian Webster: Hi, I’m Brian. I am very interested in international effective development issues and the Millennium Development Goals. There was recently a worldwide event of 116 million people, standing up for the Millennium Development Goals, including people on the U.C. Berkeley campus and students in high schools here in San Francisco. My question is, will Congress and will the future president talk about the Millennium Development Goals, and try and educate the American public about our commitments, and how international development assistance is good for national security —

Michael Krasny: OK, Brian, we’re really almost out of time here, I want to get a response from —

Nancy Pelosi: Yes, Brian, thank you for your question. Yes, indeed, I think it’s very important for our country to assume its rightful leadership role in the world, to work with other countries, as President Kennedy said, to promote freedom for everyone. To end violence, to the fury of dispair that causes some of the violence, we must work together with people, and the Millennium Goals and the funding that goes with it are very very important. And I think we would have the support of the American people in a stronger way, with a president like Barack Obama, who can articulate why that is important, why it should be a priority for us, and why it is not only a compassion issue, but an issue of our national security as well. Thank you for your interest.

Michael Krasny: Thank you, Speaker Pelosi. Thank you, Nancy Pelosi.
