All over Marin County, teachers like myself are welcoming students back to school.
How great would it be if all children were sharing this experience?
In fact, there are 61 million children in the developing world who do not have access to a quality education.
The World Bank is one of the most important sources of education funding for poor countries.
In 2010 it made a promise to increase funding for basic education by $750 million over the next five years.
Now it has significantly reduced the amount, denying children access to school. Why is this important to Americans?
No country has achieved economic stability and growth (and by inference become a U.S. trading partner) without 40 percent of its adults being able to read and write.
When the World Bank meets in October, let's hold it accountable.
Promises must be kept, especially when they affect the future of millions of children around the world
