To the great credit of the Obama administration, USAID Administrator Raj Shah has just announced a three-year, $450 million pledge to the public-private Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization. Other countries, including post-earthquake Japan, have also made major commitments. This money is expected to save more than 4 million lives by 2015.
Now, it's up to Congress to authorize the spending. Or, as I should say, it's up to us to urge the members of Congress to balance intelligent cost-cutting with intelligent, cost-effective programs that save children's lives and build a better world.
