From Mercury News readers

Recently, the news media has covered the historic famine in the Horn of Africa, however, there is an alternate, positive side to this terrible catastrophe which is seldom covered, that had the United States not spent millions in foreign aid trying to build the infrastructure and institutions critical to growth and development throughout the Third World, this crisis would have been much worse. As we speak, the U.S. Congress is beginning to debate a crucial piece of legislation, which, if passed, will expand educational opportunities for the world's poorest, with a particular focus on girls and hard-to-reach communities. So, I urge the readers of the San Jose Mercury News to stand up and make sure that the Education for All Act of 2011 becomes law.
