Talk of the Nation Letters

March 28, 2002, approximately 3:50 pm ET

Neal Conan: A couple of responses to our program on foreign aid. Joel Rubinstein e-mailed to argue that foreign aid can work.

“Aid and private donations have,” he wrote, “nearly eradicated polio from the face of the earth. Foreign aid and private donations have promoted microenterprise programs that have given 30 million of the world's poorest, especially women, the opportunity to start and expand small businesses and lift themselves and their families up from poverty. We should continue the good work of disease control, education, and microenterprise support,” he says, “and cut funding for programs that don’t work.”
